Abram building foundations

HORNETS get back down to business next Tuesday when the squad meet up with coach Darren Abram for a pre-season briefing.

And it's down to work on Thursday with a training session at Hopwood Hall College, followed by some fitness training at Tandle Hill on Saturday.

"I've got a meeting with the players on Tuesday," said Abram, "and we will start training on Thursday.

"And from then on we will be in Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We will be based at Hopwood Hall, Middleton on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the gym, which has got some free weights. There's also a pitch so we can do some weights and running there. On Saturday mornings we will probably be at Tandle Hill running up and down the hills."

The Hornets boss, though is aware that training without a game at weekends can become tedious, and with the Spotland outfit's next match not until 28 January - The Law Cup against Oldham at Boundary Park - he is keen to avoid the pitfalls, adding: "Our first match is a long way off so we have to be careful we don't get bored, overtrain and get too tired.

"But you also have to have a foundation to work on. There will be some hard work and fun involved to keep the players' minds active."

Abram is happy with the squad he has put together and has received several calls this week from players putting themselves forward.

"It's strange really because I have had phone calls from players this week who are interested in joining the club.

"But with the budget I'm struggling to bring anyone else in. If there were an extra 1,000 fans coming through the gate or another sponsor with some more money to help us out I could probably pick up another two players. But we know what we have to work on and we'll get on with the job."
