Abram takes the reins at hornets

ROCHDALE Hornets will officially unveil Darren Abram as their new coach this week.

Abram, a former Hornets player, has built up his coaching portfolio with spells at Chorley Lynx but made his name by taking Leigh into Super League.

He was set to be formally introduced to the players on Tuesday evening when the squad met up for a training session.

Hornets spokeswoman Karen Reynolds said both club and coach were excited by the prospect of working together: "We had an excellent meeting on Monday and one of the things that came through was that Darren very much has his head screwed on in terms of seeing the bigger picture at a club like ours.

"He knows it is not just about putting a team out on the pitch and he is well-versed in the importance of commercial operations. He understands what is required to take this club forward.

"We felt that, with his previous coaching experience and his excellent communication skills, he was the ideal man for the job.

"We will be working towards a common goal and both parties are excited at the potential here at Hornets.

"Darren sees the club as being very much on the edge of the top-six League One clubs. He does not see Hornets as a small club and is conscious of our sound reputation within the game."

And Abram paid tribute to the work done by former coach Bobbie Goulding in bringing Hornets so far during his time at the club.

"Darren recognises the great efforts of Bobbie.

"He feels he is inheriting a healthy playing squad. Like any coach he will want to put his own stamp on the squad but he is extremely positive and can't wait to get started."
