Barrow Res 58 Rochdale Hornets 28

2/ 8/2008

THE journey to Craven Park to play Barrow last Saturday didn’t augur well for Hornets Reserves with numerous hold ups due to the start of the summer ‘M6’ getaway.

This, though, was no excuse for another poor start to an away game by Hornets, who trailed 24-0 after just 16 minutes.

Excellent home stand off Scott Kaighan had already contributed 18 points, before Matty Moores and Jonathan Smith scored a try apiece for the visitors just before half time but, in truth, Hornets first half defensive stint was woeful and that was reflected in the score of 34-8 at the interval.

The second period was marginally better. Kieron Tucker scored a trademark solo try, Matty Cunliffe crossed and two more Jonathan Smith tries, coupled with two Todd O’Brien goals, rounded off the scoring on a miserable afternoon for Hornets.

One positive to take from the match was another impressive performance by young Smith. He was one of only a few who could hold their heads up after the game, scoring a fine hat-trick of tries with full power and pace. Smith must surely have caught the eye of the Hornets coaching staff.

If play-off hopes are to be maintained then this performance must be laid to rest very quickly.

Their destiny lies in the three remaining fixtures: Sheffield at home today, kick-off 2.30pm at Castleton Sports Centre; Dewsbury (away) and Widnes at home. Hopefully all the good work in the early part of a long hard season will not go to waste.

Team: Kieron Tucker (t); Benji Lloyd; Craig Highton; Matty Cunliffe (t); Jamie Knight; Chris Hough; Eric Johnson; Tom Wild; Todd O’Brien (2g); Danny Knight; Matty Moores; Scott Frost; Ben Clare; John Sweeney; Jonathan Smith (3g); Wes Lawton; Andy Marsh.
