Giles back in the Hornets fold

Exclusive by Mike Floyd
15/ 7/2008

HORNETS have signed former fans’ favourite Chris Giles on a month’s loan from National League One outfit Leigh Centurions.

Giles, a utility back who was voted supporters’ player of the year in 2006, will bolster Darren Shaw’s squad who face a tough finale in their remaining seven games.

Hornets boss Shaw is delighted to have Giles on board and said: "We have been given the green light to take Chris on a month’s loan from Leigh and we are just waiting for all the paperwork to go through and hopefully he should be available for us this weekend.

"Chris is very good at the back and gives us a lot more depth and a bit more strength out wide to put pressure on people. He retains the ball very well, has good footwork, strong defence and he’s a very good talker. He has been at the club before so he knows his way around. I’m familiar with him and he is familiar with some of the guys who are here. I think he will be a great addition for us and as I say, he gives us a bit more strength in depth during the tough run we have over the next three or four weeks when we will need a lot of bodies on board."

Shaw also reflected on his team’s 54-34 win against Workington Town on Sunday. And, while his team scored 10 tries, there were still some concerns on defence. He added: "Whoever retained possession was always going to apply the pressure and I thought we did it very well in spells. We put them under pressure and they folded a bit. They then did it on us and we folded.

"It was very hot out there and it took a lot of gas out of the tank. Our completions have been running at 40 to 50 per cent but we were averaging 76 per cent, 82 in the second half. We got off to a very good start, we had a lot of movement off the ball and asked some questions on their inside and we went away from it a little bit. But at the start of the second-half they kicked out on the full so straightaway we’re on the front foot and we put the foot on their throat and choked them a little bit. It’s all about possession, if you don’t retain it you’re going to put a lot of pressure on yourself and then it affects your attack. But full credit to Workington, they never laid down and they came straight back at us and got a couple of tries themselves. We didn’t want to let them have the bonus point and I’m very happy with the overall outcome.  Everyone played their part but we’ve got to get a lot tighter in our defence as everyone saw we were a bit loose."

  • HORNETS were set to sign experienced winger Leroy Rivett at training last night.

Rivett set the rugby league world alight with Leeds Rhinos, scoring four tries in the 1999 Challenge Cup final to win the Lance Todd Trophy.
