Swarm set to Fijians

3/ 5/2008

AHORNETS celebrate the unique link between the club, the town of Rochdale and the island of Fiji with a special challenge match before Monday’s match against Hunslet at Spotland.

The supporters’ Tag rugby league team - Rochdale Swarm - meet a team drawn from the local Fijian Association, kick-off 1pm.

The Fijian and British national anthems will be sung before the start.

And, it is rumoured, the Fijian team will be performing their

version of the ‘Haka’ which should prove a spectacular sight.

Rochdale Swarm’s Mark Wynn said: "Everyone feels privileged to be playing in such a prestigious fixture, especially when you look back at the great Fijian players who played for Hornets, such as Ravouvou, Toga, Drui and Ratu.

"This is our way of showing the Fijians the respect we have for them".

Swarm and the Fijian Association have recently benefited from grants from the National Lottery’s "Awards for All" scheme.

The grant allowed the RFA to launch

its own website www.rochdalefijianassociation.com while allowing the Swarm to invest in a coaching and training infrastructure.
