BOTH Rochdale & District Sunday League teams won their matches in the Maxlocal Sunday Trophy fixtures last weekend.
Midland Phoenix beat Cadley FC 5-1 while Rochdalians put four past Bryn Park who only managed one in return.
James Tolson and Danny Oldham scored two each with Andy Thorpe finishing off the scoring to help Midland grab maximum points. Scoring for Rochdalians were Josh Lythgoe (2) and D Cooper (2).
In the Newbold Tyres Premier Division, North Star moved above Copper Pot to claim first place after beating Turks Head 2-1.
The result also means that Turks stay at the bottom of the table and they are still yet to claim a point this season. Carl Taylor and Andrew Fulham ensured their side’s victory, with Andy Eastwood replying for Turks.
Both North Star and Copper Pot are due to play this Sunday and neither side can afford a slip up with just three points between them.
More games went ahead in the Physio Clinic First Division last Sunday and plenty of goals were produced from them.
A thrilling draw between Middleton Colts and FC Dale saw 12 goals scored. Colts are second from bottom in the league and faced a tough encounter against first placed Dale, but the side battled well to earn a point.
Successful for FC Dale were Scott Highton (2), Danny Armstrong (2), Wayne Traynor and O’Brien.
There was nothing to give between Dog & Partridge and FC Bernard either.
There is just one point separating the clubs with D&P in third place and Bernard in fourth. Damion Fairclough got D&P’s goal and Scott Greenwood scored for Bernard.
Boundary Park continued to struggle as they lost 4-0 to Duke of Wellington. The loss is their sixth in seven games, but they do have several games in hand on the teams above them.
Securing Duke’s victory were John Whitehead (2), Andy Mullin and Lee Bates.
Red Lion made sure they stayed in second place when they beat mid-table Royal Exchange 5-1. Ross Doherty (2), Gary Isherwood, Oliver Marshall and Andrew McDowell put the ball in the back of the net for Lion, as Lee Feeney replied for Exchange.
Italia made it eight wins in eight in the www.poorlypuppy.com Second Division. The side put six past Asia and conceded two to stay at the top of the table.
There are still only three points in it between Italia and second placed Crown & Shuttle however. Scoring for Asia were Shefat Yousaf and Fawaz Yaqub, but goals from Ste Faulkner (2), Julian Kumah (2), Ben Elliot and Scott Brierley earned Italia the win.
Asia will have another challenging match this Sunday when they will face Crown & Shuttle who have only dropped one point so far this season.
There was action at both ends of the Cowell & Norford Third Division last weekend.
Wellington’s hopes of getting their first point on the board were smashed by Blue Ball who knocked ten past the team stuck on minus one point.
Mark Hilton and C Cooper both scored hat-tricks in the goals fest, with Paul Smith, L Smith, T O’Mahoney and an own goal completing the ten.
Things won’t get any easier for the side either when they play joint league leaders Pleasant Inn this weekend.
It was an own goal that settled a close game between now joint first placed Broadway Celtic Reserves and Pleasant Inn. Before the fixture, Inn needed maximum points to close in on Broadway. Liam McManus got on the scoresheet for Broadway as an own goal and P Birnie got Inn the much needed victory.
The Star began their bid to climb up the table and out of second from bottom place when they beat Red Lion Reserves 2-1.
A McWilliam and Jamie Cooke’s goals earned their side the win, while Greg Ginnever’s effort wasn’t quite enough for Lion Reserves.
Rochdalians and Midland Phoenix are due to play in the LFA Sunday Trophy tomorrow.
