'Where the hell are you?'
Richard Partington12/ 4/2008
DALE chairman Chris Dunphy has hit out at the people of Rochdale for their lack of support and interest in the town’s football club.
The Spotland outfit strengthened their position among the play-off places with a 4-2 win over Notts County on Tuesday before a crowd of just 2,546 – a pitiful turn-out considering the team stands on the brink of unheralded success.
Automatic promotion or a trip to the play-off final at Wembley could be just around the corner – yet Mr Dunphy has been left to wonder whether or not the town cares.
"At this moment in time we have the best product out on the pitch that we have had for a lifetime and it is disappointing that the town of Rochdale is not getting behind us in the numbers the team deserves," he said.
"I have said it time and again that the small band of supporters we have are simply the best in the country – but where is everyone else? We now have a very nice stadium and a young management team who have produced a vibrant squad of quality young players.
"The team is producing attractive, winning football week in, week out.
"We have even tried a series of initiatives which included reducing admission prices aimed at getting the town behind us.
"We are striving to produce a successful centenary season but we don’t seem to have the backing of the town. It is frustrating trying to hold things together financially and to progress without that support."
While stressing his appreciation of the hard-core following, Mr Dunphy appealed for further backing.
"The support base that we actually have never ceases to amaze me," he said. "They travel all over the country to get behind the team, they dig snow off the pitch and stay up all night helping to defrost the surface. Their commitment is incredible but we need and deserve more from the rest of the town.
"I would say to those people who haven’t got behind us that this is your town and your team.
"Where are you?"
