Second-half show shakes off Spotland demons

19/ 3/2008

ROCHDALE approach the Easter programme with renewed belief following a remarkable turnaround in their home win over Accrington Stanley on Sunday.

A poor first-half performance was turned on its head once Adam Le Fondre levelled from the penalty spot just before the break, prompting a return to the irresistible cut and thrust football not witnessed at Spotland since New Years Day when Dale beat Darlington 3-1.

The hosts went on to win 4-1, ending a run of five successive home defeats. Manager Keith Hill insists the return to form at home could prove vital in Dale’s attempt to land a play-off spot.

"We made horrific mistakes in the first half when we looked lacklustre and lacking belief," said Hill. "The previous five home defeats had an impact on the players and I think everyone breathed a sigh of relief when we equalised because we’d got away with it. But we were a different animal after the break.

"The penalty inspired the players and lifted their confidence. There was no screaming and shouting from us at half time.

"Hopefully the second half performance has set a template for the rest of our home matches. It certainly got rid of a few demons.

"We’ve buried the hoodoo now, laid a foundation for the rest of the season and we’ve got to maintain the belief we showed in the second half throughout our remaining home and away fixtures.

"We’ve got 56 points, only 10 points off what we achieved last season, so we’re well on the way to beating that. We want to get into the play-offs and Sunday’s result gave us a tremendous lift and closed the gap on Chesterfield and Rotherham – who we’ve yet to play at home – and we have games in hand on those teams."
