DECIMATED by injury and ineligibility Rochdale’s spirited makeshift side were dumped out of the FA Cup at the first attempt.
Rochdale fell behind after just 26 seconds when midfielder Nick Bailey headed home, but within 11 minutes a close-range finish from Adam Le Fondre brought the scores level.
On 24 minutes Dale were left to rue a dubious refereeing decision when referee Horwood gave a penalty against Nathan Stanton and Matt Harrold converted from 12 yards.
Dale were much the better side in the second half but couldn’t claw their way back and in the last minute keeper Sam Russell saved another debatable penalty.
In the final seconds Le Fondre was denied an equaliser by a stunning Steve Collis save.
