Latics back to hard work
2/ 7/2008
LATICS’ class of 2008/09 returned to training this week ahead of their pre-season games which start in the next fortnight.
The squad started back at Boundary Park on Monday with the emphasis on building up their fitness in a bid to enjoy a flying start to the new Coca-Cola League One season.
Barring the private friendly against Cercle Brugge, Athletic are back in action on Saturday, July 19 when they travel to League Two side Grimsby Town (kick-off 1pm).
That is followed by midweek home games against Derby County and Hull City later this month, culminating in the trip to Bradford City on Saturday, August 2 ahead of the season-opener against Millwall seven days later.
Elsewhere, Dundee United manager Craig Levein has clarified the situation regarding his club’s apparent interest in signing Lee Hughes.
Reports from north of the border at the end of last week suggested that the Latics striker was a possible transfer target for the SPL club, much to the surprise of Boundary Park officials.
However, Levein has now revealed that he was approached by an agent who claimed that Hughes was out of contract at Boundary Park when he still has another 12 months left on his original deal, causing any interest to quickly evaporate.
