Cup proposals face a knockout - for at least a year

24/11/2007

MIDDLETON Cricket Club feel dramatic changes should be made to the Lake Garage Central Lancashire League’s Lees Brewery sponsored Wood Cup.

They suggest the straight knockout should be replaced by an initial group contest, with the group winners and runners-up going into the quarter-finals. This would guarantee at least one home fixture for every club.

Teams who finished level on points in the group tables would be split by the overall run-rate from all group matches played by them. Tied matches in the following knockout would be replayed with venue reversed.

Unfortunatelty the Middleton proposal looks a non-starter, at least for next season. The league management committee has included the proposal on the agenda for the annual meeting which will be held next week, and they feel there is some merit to the proposal, but point out they cannot support it at this stage.

They feel the proposal/proposals would have to be discussed with and approved by Lees Brewery, and the Burton Cup for second teams would also have to be looked at. With this in mind it would not be possible to deal with the issue in time for next season.

Still with the Cup, Unsworth, finalists last season and obviously aggrieved that the final was played on the ground of winners Heywood, suggest that if the ground designated for the final is the home of either of the finalists an alternative ground should be used.

Unsworth also suggest that all Saturday and Sunday matches should start at 1pm.

The management committee want to introduce a rule that all deliveries passing down the leg side, with the batsman in his normal stance at the crease, be called and signalled wide.
