Max claim title on the final day

Max XI won the maiden Rochdale Premier Cricket League by winning their match against Rochdalians on the final day of the campaign.

Closest rivals RYCC lost their last match against Baba XI to finish in second with 24 points, while Stoney Stars ended in third place with 22 points.

Zaman joins Milnrow

Milnrow Cricket Club’s junior section has recently been awarded grants from Sport England’s Small Grant Programme and the Co-operative Community Fund.

The money is to be used to fund the cost of coaching courses for volunteer coaches, new equipment, indoor training sessions and has also enabled them to appoint a new head coach.

RYCC had an easy afternoon – their opponents, All Stars, failed to turn up, gaving them two points and keeping them joint top with 24 points.

A former New Zealand Test player, who made cricket history for Gloucestershire by beating a batting record set by the great Dr WG Grace, is to be Rochdale Cricket Club’s professional in the 2010 season.

Craig Spearman, aged 37, spent eight years at Gloucestershire, setting many batting records on the way, but retired from first class cricket in October.

THE Rochdale Premier Cricket League is really heating up at the top, a good win for RYCC over Stoney Stars keeping them in top spot on 22 points while Max XI beat Unique to stay second with 20 points.

Zane Arthur has urged his former Norden team-mates not to repeat the mistakes of last season which handed the Central Lancashire League title to Monton and Weaste.

Arthur, who claimed Norden’s player of the year and clubman of the year awards before bowing out of the CLL last year, branded Norden’s early season performances in 2009 as "pitiful".

RYCC inflicted the second defeat of the league on Max XI while Stoney Stars kept their wining run going in the second round of the Rochdale Premier Cricket League.

Stoney Stars won the toss and elected to bat first against Rochdalians. A good batting display from Wasim (30 not out), Shakir 18 runs, Yasir 15 runs and Saif 12 runs, allayed to 32 extras, gave Starts a total of 113 runs.

Thornham warm up in the big freeze

Thornham Cricket club saw the first pre-season junior cricket practice session at the weekend.

Not deterred by the 10 inches of snow on the outfield, some of the lads turned out to take part in a game of kwik cricket to help launch the pre-season nets, building up for the season which starts in less than four months.

Max XI, Unique and Jandians all started 2010 in winning style in Rochdale Premier Cricket League. The pressure is building up on all the teams as the first round of matches approaches its end.

First match of the day last weekend was affected by the heavy snow fall as Suli XI failed to make it to the Sports Centre. It meant an easy two points in the bag for Stoney Stars, leaving them second in the league table.

Perren to return as Hare Hill pro

AUSTRALIAN cricketer Clinton Perren makes a welcome return to his old hunting ground at Hare Hill next summer as professional for Littleborough.

The 34-year-old has recently retired from first class cricket with Queensland after 11 years. He made his debut in 1998 and has since made 84 first-class appearances and played in105 one-dayers.

DISGRUNTLED clubs have bowled a bouncer at the Central Lancashire League’s hierarchy in a new move to revamp their league.

Rival sides Norden, Monton & Weaste, Milnrow and Walsden have joined forces to summon a special general meeting of the Lake Garage CLL later this month to try and push through the most far-reaching changes in the league’s 117-year history.

Premier League under way

The Rochdale Premier indoor cricket league started last week when MP Paul Rowen formally opened the tournament accompanied by Tahir Mahmood, chairman of RSCL.

When the action got under way, the first game of the tournament saw Baba XI take on Rochdalians. Rochdalians batted first and scored 138. Their main contributors were Hameed who scored 30 not out and Malik with 20. Baba XI scored 117 runs and a couple of their batsman showed resistance including Shakeel (12) and Tayab (33). Rochdalians won the match by 11 runs. Hameed was declared man of the match from Rochdalians.
