Breast-feeding mums in phone film fear
Katie Fitzpatrick28/ 7/2007
ADMISSION policies are being reviewed at the Odeon cinema following complaints that a man was seen filming breastfeeding mothers on his mobile phone.
The man was removed from a Wednesday morning 'Newbies' screening for parents and young babies after a number of women reported that he was acting suspiciously.
The Odeon is now looking at its policy, which previously allowed the public into Newbies shows.
General manager Richard Wilson says he was 'disturbed and alarmed' to hear about the incident.
A parent, who attended Newbies for the first time with her 15-week-old baby, complained to staff that the man was without a partner or a baby at the screening of 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix'. There were 20 other mothers there.
She was shocked to be told that the public could attend the regular weekly screenings, which are aimed at parents to enjoy with a quieter volume and raised lighting and without worrying that their little ones will disturb others by making a noise.
The woman, who does not want to be named, said she told the duty manager 'enough is enough' when another mother told her that the man was using his mobile phone.
She said: "I think that the police should have been called and the man should have had his phone removed to see what was on it. The Newbies club should be a place to go to feel comfortable."
Mr Wilson added: "When we ejected this man he insisted that he was using his phone to text on and we have no proof that he was filming the mothers.
"He was very upset to be asked to leave. But if someone feels uncomfortable we have got to take action.
"I don't believe that his mobile phone was checked and I will look into why this didn't happen."
A spokeswoman for the Odeon said that the company takes all complaints extremely seriously and that a full investigation had been launched into the matter.
