Young father killed in horror car crash

29/ 5/2007

A YOUNG father has been killed and his friends seriously injured in an horrific crash in Royton.

Craig Franklin suffered fatal head injuries when the black Volkswagen Golf he was travelling in collided with a lamp post in Broadway and turned over on to its roof.

Police are now trying to establish whether 23-year-old Craig, of Chadderton, was behind the wheel.

Two neighbours have described how they rushed out to help the injured on Saturday night, smashing a side window to pull out a passenger, who had escaped with a cut to his head.

Two other men, thought to be in their early 20s, were rushed to hospital, one suffering from a broken back and the other with serious head injuries.

Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

One of the residents said: "I heard a bang and saw the car was on its roof, with its back wheels up against a tree.

"It had demolished a lamp post and turned over. It was lucky no one else was killed.

"Another neighbour and myself pulled one lad out and he just had a cut to his head. He was obviously in shock after seeing what had happened to his mates."

Among the poignant messages left at the scene was one left by Claire which described Craig as a 'great partner and a fantastic father.'

"Nobody will ever replace you," it stated.

Another read: "I can't believe you are gone, son.

"Never forget you, Jambo."

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police on 0161 856 8473.
