Swashbuckler Mark’s big screen romance

BUDDING Romeo Mark Spencer banked on the big gesture to win the hand of his long-term girlfriend Heather Hickey.
The couple, of Brotherod Hall Road, who have been dating for 10 years, went to see the film 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' at the Odeon cinema and Heather was in for a big surprise.
As they settled in their seats, it was Mark who appeared on the big screen, rather than Johnny Depp and declared his love for her.
Unknown to Heather, he had asked to show a written advert on screen asking for her hand in marriage, but the cinema went one better and offered to video his proposal for free.
Still reeling from the experience, she said: "I was completely in shock, just overwhelmed.
"One minute we were sitting in our seats eating popcorn and the next Mark was on screen proposing to me.
"He said: 'I hope this is romantic enough. I love you to bits and I want the whole world to know it.' I turned round to look at him and he was down on one knee, holding out a ring."
The mother-of-two said everyone in the cinema stood up and cheered.
She added: "I was too stunned to say anything, we just hugged each other.
"Then I cried my eyes out!"
Mark, aged 27, said: "Heather has been my girlfriend for 10 years and we have two children, aged five and three.
"Up to recently I had been scared of commitment, but then I realised she was the one I wanted to be with for the rest of my life.
"She knew I wanted to propose to her but had no idea how it would happen.
"I've surprised myself because I'm not one for big gestures, but she means everything to me."
The couple hope to marry either later this year or next year, depending on their financial situation. In the meantime they are looking forward to a holiday in Corfu in September after moving to a new home in Bamford.
