Local elections 2007 - results

4/ 5/2007

A NIGHT of drama at the Town Hall saw history made as the Liberal Democrats took overall control of Rochdale Council for the first time.

They increased their number of seats to 32, giving them an overall majority.

Among the casualties as they swept to power were the mayor, Labour’s  Jean Hornby and Conservative deputy leader Ian Duckworth.

Delighted Lib Dem leader Alan Taylor said: “In the last 12 months we have laid the foundations for our good work.

“We are determined that local people will see a difference.”

It was a mixed night for Labour, who recovered from several losses with three gains which kept their tally at 20 seats.

Leader Allen Brett said: “I do feel there has been a lot of campaigning done on national issues.”

It was a bad night for the Conservatives, who saw their number of seats fall to eight.

Ashley Dearnley, their leader, said: “We came so close in places.”

In Heywood, aside from the Mayor's defeat, Labour's Jacqui Beswick and Susan Emmott kept their seats comfortably.

And in West Middleton Terry Smith who defected from Labour to the Lib Dems, failed to win the seat against Labour's Terry Linden

Since I turned 18 I have voted at every election. This year I didn't bother as I did not get one leaflet, one knock at the door or anything else to suggest that someone was actually bothered about my vote. As I said previously I believe its important to vote, but I had absolutely no idea who was standing or what their intentions were. When a close family member of mine stood for the council a few years back I remember us spending what seemed like an eternity canvassing, delivering leaflets and using any other method to try and encourage peoples vote that we could think of. I would also assume that judging by the lack of posters in peoples' windows (I haven't seen any at all locally) I am not the only one who has been 'missed out'. No wonder only 30% of people voted - perhaps the other 70% are not even aware that an election took place!

They all have a go at one another. None of them are worth voting for
