LIB DEM leader Alan Taylor shows his delight at the Town Hall as the results come in

A NIGHT of drama at the Town Hall saw history made as the Liberal Democrats took overall control of Rochdale Council for the first time.
They increased their number of seats to 32, giving them an overall majority.
Among the casualties as they swept to power were the mayor, Labour’s Jean Hornby and Conservative deputy leader Ian Duckworth.
Delighted Lib Dem leader Alan Taylor said: “In the last 12 months we have laid the foundations for our good work.
“We are determined that local people will see a difference.”
It was a mixed night for Labour, who recovered from several losses with three gains which kept their tally at 20 seats.
Leader Allen Brett said: “I do feel there has been a lot of campaigning done on national issues.”
It was a bad night for the Conservatives, who saw their number of seats fall to eight.
Ashley Dearnley, their leader, said: “We came so close in places.”
In Heywood, aside from the Mayor's defeat, Labour's Jacqui Beswick and Susan Emmott kept their seats comfortably.
And in West Middleton Terry Smith who defected from Labour to the Lib Dems, failed to win the seat against Labour's Terry Linden
