Rumour sparked firm inquiry

3/ 4/2007

AS WAR fever mounted in Britain an alleged phone call sparked a rumour which engulfed a Rochdale firm in controversy.

It was claimed that TBA Industrial Products in Spotland had received an urgent call from Argentina asking for spare tank parts.

With national newspapers and television companies demanding information, the firm launched a full-scale inquiry, questioning the export managers of all its divisions.

A TBA spokesman said: "The entire workforce was talking about the telephone call but we have been unable to trace any such call.

"We have supplied the Argentine in the past but even if we had received a request for urgent spares we could not have supplied them because of the trade embargo."
