Concern at clinic’s move to Infirmary

THE diabetes clinic at Baillie Street health centre is to move to Rochdale Infirmary.

From Monday Doctors Tom Akintewe and Martin Fletcher will hold their surgeries at the Infirmary, although some specialist diabetes nurses will still operate from the centre.

The move has caused concern among some patients who fear the quality of the service may decline as a result of the change.

One annoyed patient, who did not want to be named, said: "I think it is very sad. I only found out when I went this week for a check-up and even the staff didn't know where they were going.

"When were they planning on telling people?

"In future we will have to go to the Infirmary for appointments but the service won't be as good or as personal.

"A lot of people have been going to the clinic for years and the staff there are so friendly.

"It has always been more like a drop-in centre and I am worried how this will affect the service patients get because I just cannot see it being as good at the Infirmary."

A spokesman for Rochdale Infirmary said: "The clinics are certainly not closing.

"All that is happening is that from 2 April the clinics held by Dr Akintewe and Dr Fletcher at Baillie Street health centre will be held at the Infirmary.

"Patients who are cared for by the diabetes specialist nurses are not affected and will see no change.

"They can continue to see their nurse at Baillie Street or at their GP surgery.

"GPs and patients have all been informed of this change."

How will changing the location of the clinics compromise how well (or otherwise) they operate?

It really is sad that these patients were not told of this move , but if it is any consolation neither were the Staff at the Infirmary ! The first I heard of it was when I read it in the Observer along with I am sure many more . The level of communication from the managers is discraceful and this is yet more proof of the level and lack of information keeping the staff informed of major changes.
