Millie helps out with £1,000 gift

A THREE-YEAR-OLD who is fighting cancer has presented £1,000 to charity.

Millie O'Shea, from Valley View, Shawforth, was diagnosed with a kidney tumour in August and is on her second intensive course of chemotherapy in a bid to rid her body of the disease. She has also had an operation and a course of radiotherapy.

Kind hearts have been fund-raising for the tot since she was diagnosed and Caroline Westerman, cousin of Millie's dad Garry, has been co-ordinating the efforts at her business Caroline's Diner in St James Square, Bacup.

She said: "We have raised £4,000 and I am very grateful to everyone who has contributed and to the businesses in Bacup and Whitworth who gave raffle prizes for a fund-raising pool event at the Half-Way House in Facit."

Millie is having a break from treatment for Christmas but her 34-weeks of chemotherapy begins again on 2 January.

She was back in the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, last Saturday because she got an infection in her Hickman line, where the chemotherapy is administered, but it was hoped she could be home for Christmas.

At Caroline's Diner a large teddy bear was handed in for Millie and a resident of Barker Court, Bacup, donated a hamper they had won.

Caroline said she was giving it to a customer in a free raffle to say thank you for their help in raising £4,000.

The money was presented to Pendlebury's Children's Leukaemia Cancer Fund and Millie got the chance to meet 'Coronation Street' stars including Bev Callard, who plays Liz McDonald.

Millie is my niece. When I told my workmates about Millie, Jill Stains asked if we could raise money for her. We work at Remploy, Pinxton, Notts. We decided to do a ten mile sponsered walk. Twelve people went on the walk, most were disabled, and we raised £900. I hope to bring the cheque over to Rochdale on the 25/01/07. Jackie Cantrill
