Lisa lands leading role with young musicians

POP star Lisa Stansfield is to lend her support to Rochdale's up-and-coming musicians by becoming the new president of Rochdale Youth Orchestra.

Secretary and conductor Sue Verity announced the appointment at the orchestra's Christmas Spectacular on Saturday at the Gracie Fields Theatre.

She said: "We are over the moon. It is a major coup for the orchestra and we are delighted that Lisa has agreed to be our new president.

"We feel very proud that the young people will be able to look up to her as the figurehead of Rochdale Youth Orchestra from now on."

She added: "Lisa has sent a message to say how thrilled she is to be asked to be the new president. Although her work is very unpredictable she said she would love to attend as many concerts as possible. We hope this appointment will help raise the profile of the orchestra and encourage more children to take up music."

The Christmas concert was held in tribute to former president and composer Sir Malcolm Arnold, who died in September aged 84.

Sir Malcolm, who held the post for 14 years, was famous for writing the soundtracks to 'Bridge on the River Kwai' and 'Whistle Down the Wind'. He was also the first British composer to win an Oscar.

Two of his pieces were performed in his honour. The junior orchestra played 'Colonel Bogey' and the seniors played 'Little Suite No. 1'.

Guest performers were Oulder Hill Vocals with musical director Janet Tilney and accompanist Stephanie Ball. Guest compere for the evening was Rod Barry, who sang two numbers.
