A BRAVE local teenager came face-to-face with his sporting heroes when they presented him with a special award for courage.
Danny Round, who suffers from cancer, travelled to Edgeley Park, Stockport, to meet the Sale Sharks rugby team and receive a Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award in recognition of his determination.
England fly half Charlie Hodgson took a break at half-time to present the Falinge Park High School pupil with his prize in front of thousands of Sharks fans and after the match, 13-year-old Danny enjoyed VIP treatment with his favourite players, including England star Jason Robinson.
The Norden lad was accompanied by his parents, closest friends and two of his teachers and speaking after the match form teacher Katie Pautz said: "We are very proud of Danny. He has been through some challenging circumstances, but he is always positive and looking to the future.
"The fact that both teachers and pupils nominated Danny for this award shows how highly thought of he is by everyone at the school."
Danny was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 10. Since then he has battled with Ewing's Sarcoma, a cancer in his spine and despite being told by doctors that the disease would leave him paralysed, he managed to fight back and walk again.
Danny is one of just 100 people to receive the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award this year. The prize was launched in April 2000 to recognise and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by secondary school students to their schools and communities.
His mother, Juli, said: "We were pleased as punch when we found out that Danny had won the award. He has worked so hard to overcome adversity and he thoroughly deserves this."
She added: "We had an absolutely superb day with Sale Sharks. Danny is a big fan of the team so he was really excited to stand on the pitch and meet the players. The crowd gave him some great cheers."
Mrs Round said that while Danny has 'his good days and his bad days,' the family were looking forward to a lovely Christmas together.
She added: "When I've had a hard day I just think what it would be like to walk a mile in my lad's shoes. He has gone though so much pain and trauma but he just gets on with it. He really is inspirational."
