Wardens power up for match day

12/12/2006

THE 'red caps' are to get more police-style powers to tackle match day parking chaos around Spotland Stadium.

From next month, the council's traffic wardens will be able to book people parking in cordoned off areas near the ground.

Double yellow lines will also be painted on nearby streets, especially Sandy Lane, where numerous residents say they have trouble gaining access to their homes.

Tracey Preston, of the Rochdale Township office, announced the plan at the Spotland Area Forum.

She said: "This will mean the council will have the same powers as the police used to have.

"The football stadium will be given bollards to place out on to the street.

"They will then ring the traffic wardens who will patrol the area and give out tickets if people park behind the bollards.

"It will mainly affect the streets around Sandy Lane. It might take a bit of time, but word should spread when people start being booked.

"This should be implemented in the new year and it is hoped it will make a difference to lots of people."

The move has been welcomed by one resident, who has spoken out at several meetings about the parking problems around the stadium.

Speaking after the meeting, Alan Somerville said: "It's about time something was done.

"I think it is reasonable to ask for two lanes of traffic on a road and to be able to walk along safely.

"At the moment they park all over the place and I feel sooner or later someone will get killed on the road."

But he added: "I would also ask for a bit of common sense as well as enforcement.

"Why can't the fans park on Oulder Hill School in Hudsons Walk on match days? It's not rocket science."

Yeah.. thats sounds like a good plan!! Give some mentally challenged jobsworth of a traffic warden some power!! How knows where it will end!! I can tell you this now... it will end in tears for the residents as they will be penalised for the slightest errors!! Give them extra powers will only boost council coffers under the guise of a parking problem!! DONT BE FOOLED AS WILL BE USED AS A MONEY MAKING VENTURE!!
