Heartbroken family join in the battle

13/10/2006

A HEARTBROKEN family found the strength to join the battle against hospital cuts just days after their five-year-old son died.

Brave Dion Fitton lost his fight against a condition known as global development delay at his Smallbridge home on Sunday.

Both Dion and his older brother, Jordan-Lee, were unable to walk, talk or stand. They were regularly rushed to the accident and emergency department at the Infirmary.

The boys and their parents, David and Lisa-Louise Fitton, from Roach Vale, have campaigned against cuts to the urgent A and E service .

Now Mr and Mrs Fitton and Jordan-Lee, aged six, have vowed to keep on fighting in memory of their 'special little boy'.

Mr Fitton said: "At weekends, we let the boys have a lie in until 9am.

"But when my wife went into Dion's room to try and wake him, she said 'come on, wake up', but she knew in her heart he had gone.

"The doctor said he wouldn't have suffered and went peacefully in his sleep.

"I was upset we hadn't been there to hold his hand but he went safe in the knowledge he was surrounded by love."

Despite their grief, Mr and Mrs Fitton decided to attend Wednesday night's protest about the cuts.

Mr Fitton said: "This has just strengthened our resolve and our action was for Jordan.

"Going to the lobby was what Dion would have wanted, he would have told us to get off our bottoms and protect the hospital.

"He always had a big smile when he was at the Infirmary and when we called for an ambulance on Sunday he was taken to the Infirmary's accident and emergency department where the staff were absolutely brilliant.

"This is the worst times of our lives but standing up for the Infirmary is what Dion would have wanted."

A memorial service for Dion was held on Thursday at Shore Methodist Church and the funeral will take place next week.

The family have requested family flowers only, but anyone wishing to make a donation can do so to Stockdales Care Home, Sale, on 0161 973 2296.

I have the greatest respect for Lisa & Dave and Lisa's Mum for coming to the protest on Wednesday and for thier strong determination in continuing to fight against the proposed hospital cuts, if anyone knows the level of danger and risk involved in losing these services it is this family.
