Health staff face job cuts

29/ 9/2006

MENTAL health staff are to lose their jobs as health chiefs battle a £4.1M deficit.

A total of 55 - including 23 from Rochdale - working for the Pennine Care NHS Trust will be affected. Twenty of them will go in December and the Trust hopes the rest will be made up of voluntary redundancies.

The trust runs mental health services in Rochdale, Bury, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside and Glossop.

Pennine Care, which employs 2,200, has to bridge a £4.1M deficit this year and find savings of a further £2M next year.

Staff facing re-deployment will be notified by mid-October and redundancy notices will be handed out mid-December.

As part of the trust's efficiency plan, a north and south division will be created to save money in the short-term and reduce management.

Pennine Care's total income in 2005/2006 was £94M, nearly an eight per cent increase on the previous year.

The cuts come at a time when the trust is taking on major capital building schemes in Rochdale and Bury.

John Archer, the chief executive, said: "I appreciate the difficulty and stress this is going to cause some areas and services.

"We will aim to secure additional investment from our commissioners and build new services which will put the trust on a more stable financial footing for the long term and ensure the future of improved, high-quality services for our local population."

I've seen the 'Mental Health team' at work in Birch Hill, not only are the wards overstaffed with agency workers, but the staff themselves can be seen bickering with one another - I was shocked and appalled. Health care 'Professionals' can be seen ordering takeaways whilst conversing with each other in the middle of the ward instead of interacting with their patients. If this is the service being offered, they may as well invest in areas where a little more 'activity' takes place.
