PCT boss Dawes feels ‘abused’ over public criticism

29/ 9/2006

HEALTH bosses have hit back at criticism over the decision to downgrade accident and emergency services at Rochdale Infirmary.

Dr Nick Dawes, local GP and chairman of the professional executive committee of the Rochdale Primary Care Trust, said he felt 'professionally abused' by claims he took part in the decision-making process.

The decision to scrap urgent accident and emergency care at the Infirmary and turn it into a locality hospital with an urgent care centre was, in fact, made by the joint committee of primary care trusts.

Speaking at Wednesday's Rochdale Primary Care Trust meeting, Dr Dawes said: "I have been very personally involved in the consultation.

"I feel aggrieved and profesionally abused at suggestions that there was political interference.

"I've been involved in the process for over two years and we know 500 clinicians have been involved in developing the options.

"I refute any accusations there has been any political influence."

Marilyn Aldred, acting trust chairwoman, said: "It's unfortunate what people are being told."

Trevor Purt, chief executive, said the locality model for Rochdale had been discussed months before he joined Rochdale PCT.

He said: "People are aware there was a meeting of the PCTs committee which was chaired, not by Nick Dawes, but by the chair of North Manchester PCT, who is a clergyman. After a while they came to a unanimous view on the option that was chosen.

"It is obviously still subject to final decision by the Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority and, as such, we can start planning, but we can't and won't implement anything until the outcome.

"I want to reiterate plans for a locality hospital for Rochdale were on the agenda six months before I came to this organisation and when Lorna Fitzsimons was MP for Rochdale.

"I've had no political leverage through any of this process."

Surley PCT boss DR N Dawes shouldn't be to surprised at the criticism he has recieved from the people of Rochdale . They expect loyalty from someone in a posistion such as he has , they are fearful of the level of care we are being left with in Rochdale and the surrounding areas. You are sat there telling them that these changes are for the best, in thier thousands they have shown thier concerns and know that they not been listened to , they /we feel really let down Dr Dawes ! They / We don't share your vision , you like I have put yourself in the public eye and you should take on board all the criticism that goes with it without your whinging. Councillor Jean Ashworth,
