Politicians united

19/ 9/2006

LEADERS of all three parties on Rochdale Council have condemned the decision to close A and E at the Infirmary.

Councillor Alan Taylor, the Liberal Democrat leader, said: "I always thought it was a foregone conclusion and they had already made up their mind. It is a great step back for health in Rochdale. I am convinced the decision was not taken because of health reasons, but because of money."

Councillor Ashley Dearnley, the Conservative leader, said: "A and E is a vital service to our town. The decision was taken for political rather than health reasons. Labour doesn't want to lose marginal seats and because Rochdale has a Liberal Democrat MP they are not bothered."

Councillor Allen Brett, leader of the Labour group, said: "Who have they consulted? Where is the democratic accountability? I would like to see the Trust's decision brought before the council's health overview scrutiny committee."
