Taxi strike on hold as police prepare to meet

THE threat of a taxi strike in Rochdale has been suspended by the Hackney Drivers' Association.

Mohammed Younis, the chairman, says he is pleased that police are taking seriously his concerns about a spate of yob attacks on cabs.

And he is adamant that any strike action will not happen until he has met with police and the council licensing department.

Mr Younis recently told the Observer that his drivers wanted to strike after bricks and stones were thrown by young thugs at moving cabs.

Mr Younis said: "I think that police and the licensing department are taking this matter seriously and Chief Inspector John Martin has promised us a meeting. We want to give them a bit of time to resolve this matter."

Mr Younis said that if strike action was to take place, he would give the public a week's notice.

He added: "At the moment there should not be any talk of a strike because I don't want the public to worry that they will be without our service. But we are hoping to come to a conclusion and we are hoping for peaceful times ahead."

Cabbie Ishtiaq Ahmed recently had to spend £250 on repairing a smashed windscreen after yobs hurled a brick at his cab near Sudden roundabout.

Licensing manager Beverley Wilkinson said: "The meeting with the taxi drivers is expected to be very soon and police and community safety will be involved.

"Driver safety is crucial so we need to deal with this problem."
