Horror as man leaps to his death

THE body of a Rochdale man has been plucked from the sea off Cornwall after he apparently jumped to his death from Hell's Mouth on Monday last week.
Walkers near Gwithian, 10 miles from St Ives, watched in horror as a figure disappeared over the cliff edge at 1.25pm.
He has been named as Michael Lesley Smart, aged 56.
Police, a coastguard cliff rescue team, both St Ives lifeboats and a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose all tried to rescue Mr Smart but were hampered by heavy seas and poor visibility.
The RNLI boats were not needed but when they turned for home the weather had deteriorated so much that the all weather lifeboat had to escort the inshore lifeboat back to land.
Mr Smart's body was recovered by the rescue helicopter.
