Government not to foot £80,000 Turner’s bill

THE GOVERNMENT will not foot any part of a possible £80,000 bill for a review of the old Turner Brother's site.

Rochdale's MP had appealed for help after hearing the council was to pay for a review of any health risks that building on the site would cause, but has been told there is no cash available.

The initial cost of the Atkins Global report is said to be £50,000, but planning chiefs warn this could rise by another £30,000.

Paul Rowen said: "This is a blow, but it wasn't unexpected.

"It now becomes critical that Rochdale Council recoup the £80,000 from the potential developer.

"I await the Atkins Global report with interest and I will continue to push in the Commons for the government to take contaminated brownfield sites more seriously.

"The concerted campaign from the Save Spodden Valley group, councillors and other politicians like myself is finally paying off."

Head of planning Ken Smith assured the news would not affect the report, which is now being checked by officers before it can be released to the public.

The Department of Council and Local Government affairs confirmed Rochdale would not receive any more cash to process the plan for 600 homes.

A spokesman said: "£135M is donated to councils every four years and a significant allocation has been made for Rochdale."

This money is also used to process 'complex' housing applications.

Seems a bit tight of the government after the billions of pounds (in todays money) they took in from Turners when they were trading. Also the govenment had a different attitude when Turners handled secret government defence contracts...
