My Katie owes her life to the Infirmary

A PLANNED pregnancy turned into a race for life for one Rochdale mother when her baby was born with breathing difficulties.

Kelly Sowerby, of Balfour Road, Spotland Bridge, gave birth to Katie, weighing 6lb 13ozs, at Rochdale Infirmary on Wednesday 12 April.

Moments later, doctors diagnosed breathing difficulties when an air pocket was found in her left lung and she was rushed to the special care baby unit, where she was incubated.

Katie's condition deteriorated and she had to have a chest drain on her left lung in the early hours of Friday morning.

Then doctors were forced to perform the same procedure when her right lung collapsed.

Once stabilised, it was decided to transfer Katie to St Mary's Hospital in Manchester and Mrs Sowerby was told her daughter might not survive the journey. But after a few days observation, Katie was well enough to return to the Infirmary's SCBU unit and made it home for the very first time last Sunday.

Mrs Sowerby, aged 27, said staff at St Mary's told her the speed and hard work of Infirmary staff saved her daughter. And the thankful mum heaped praise on Rochdale staff.

She said: "It was St Mary's who told me to thank Infir-mary staff because it was down to them Katie survived as they had not done anything extra.

"It says something when you have a world famous maternity hospital praising Rochdale staff.

"Without the services being under one roof she wouldn't have got the instant treatment and you don't think about these services until you are in that situation. But it is when you desperately need their help you suddenly realise how important they are."

Mrs Sowerby, who also has a two-year-old son, Will, said she could not fault the care she and Katie received at Rochdale.

She said: "Dr Pervaiz Mir, the consultant paediatrician, did not leave Katie's side for 42 hours, he was always checking how she was and always got called back every time he left.

"I have criticised the Infirmary in the past but when you need them, you realise how much people do for you. I feel very passionate about the services staying in Rochdale. A big thank you must go to Dr Mir and everyone who helped us."

If this baby had been delivered at another hospital then the outcome would have been the same. If it was Oldham at some time in the future a transfer to St Mary's may not have been needed with the plans to introduce neonatal intensive care at Oldham.
