Campaigners take fight to small screen

29/12/2005

SAVE Spodden Valley campaigners are set to be featured in a documentary as their fight against a controversial housing bid gains international attention.

A group of Belgian filmmakers travelled to the old Turner Brothers asbestos factory to interview Jason Addy and Su Wilson about their campaign against plans to build 600 homes on the site of what was once Europe's biggest asbestos factory.

The two-hour programme is due to be aired in Belgium next year, but its makers also hope to get it shown on British TV.

Mr Addy was contacted by producer Hendrik Verbeure, who has been following the campaign on the internet and has also been filming at other former asbestos sites in Canada and Italy.

He said: "The film makers have been following events in Rochdale and met with us at the European Parliament this September.

"The documentary will focus on the campaign, Turner Brothers documents and aerial photographs given to Rochdale Council's consultants.

"This controversial planning application to build hundreds of homes and a children's nursery on the factory is firmly in the international spotlight."

The group has had a busy month, with an apperance on BBC Radio 5 Live to discuss the campaign on Wednesday and news of the campaign being highlighted during an European Conference on asbestos, held by scientists in Venice.

Spodden Valley will also be the topic of a government seminar on 16 May at which Austrian expert Heinz Kropiunik has been invited to talk about European techniques in handling contamination.

why have the Rochdale Observer stopped putting these news reports on the 'Turners Bros Controversy' Features page? People viewing that page would probably think things have gone quiet when they haven't.

I look forward to seeing this documentary- with all that has gone on at the site there is enough for a feature film!!!
