Tragedy as biker drowns after falling into river

A FIRGROVE motorcyclist drowned after he lost control of his machine before plunging into the River Beal.

Police believe James Savage was riding along Dye House Lane, Smallbridge, on Saturday night when he dropped down a bank and into the water.

His body was spotted by passers-by the following lunchtime and was recovered by police officers.

It was learned later the 22-year-old, of Rochdale Road, had last been seen drinking in a nearby pub on Saturday night.

The unemployed former Brownhill School pupil, nicknamed 'Savros' by his friends, leaves a mother, Patricia Holt, a stepfather, Michael and an older brother, Matthew.

In a statement given to the Observer on Monday, the family said: "James was tragically taken from us.

"He was a much-loved son who will be missed by his family and friends.

"He was really well-liked and loved in the community.

"James will be sorely missed by everyone, especially his brother Matthew, who had been out with him that night in the local pub."

Police have ruled out any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, but are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokeswoman added: "I would like to warn motorcylcists to take care while riding in the winter nights."

The the matter is due to be passed on to the coroner.
