Exposed asbestos is 'no risk'? What planet are these people on ? The Head of Planning and Regulation for Rochdale Council said on BBC GMR a few months ago that safety fencing should be put up to keep people from walking on the exposed asbestos. The developers put up lots of security fencing all over the site last year when they were planning to destroy much of the woodlands around the asbestos factory- that was done to keep people away from the chainsaws. Incredibly, the only place that the new owners didn't put any 'safety' fencing up was the hillside where thousands tonnes of asbestos was letter from September 2004 proves that the new landowners KNEW about exposed asbestos- their response- to deny everything!!!! Countryside Properties went on national radio and said that local people were wrong about exposed asbestos. After more BBC investigations and broadcasts Countryside Properties and MMC apologosed for their 'miscommunication' (quite a modern weasle word - in olden days they were called lies). Now we get more 'miscommunication' - the rules on warning signs are pretty simple- if you can identify the main hazard the sign must warn about it. The 'warning signs' pinned 20 feet up trees in the Spodden Valley are bizarre- they appear to warn people not to climb trees!. The appropriate signs for that hillside dump should read "Danger Asbestos"-there are standard asbestos warning sign available at sign shops. But then again- for such a PR sensitive company, Countryside Properties probably don't want to tarnish their project's glossy image by giving the true facts about the danger that lurks, EXPOSED, close to where they still wish to build familiy homes.
