Latest asbestos find sparks off more fears

MORE exposed asbestos has been discovered on the old Turner's site.
Save Spodden Valley spokesman Jason Addy claims he has found asbestos fibres hanging from an overblown tree near Woodlands Road, to the north of the Rooley Moor Road site. It is the same area where asbestos fibres were found on the roots of several overblown trees last year.
One of the companies behind a 600-home plan for the site confirmed that more asbestos had been found at the spot, but says there is no risk to the public unless it is disturbed.
But Mr Addy said: "The developers have sent out 50,000 brochures, stating they do weekly checks on the site. But I fear this tree has been overlooked for some time. It is only about 10 metres from where people walk."
MMC Developments' Nigel Moutrey said a risk assessment has been carried out on the patch and insisted the area is being 'closely monitored.'
"Asbestos waste products have been discovered at the surface in a few areas of the woodland, which has been reported in audits," he said.
"We do not believe there is currently any risk posed to the general public, provided that the affected areas remain undisturbed until the remediation programme begins.
"We do, however, insist that people obey the warning signs and do not stray from the public right of way."
