Grave thieves leave widow heartbroken

THIEVES have stolen mementoes and flowers from a Wardle grave.

Marjorie Taylor, of Louise Gardens, Smallbridge, has visited her husband Stanley's grave in the old St James's Church graveyard on three occasions to find it had been raided.

The first time, a teddy bear left by 11-year-old granddaughter Nikkita before she left with her parents to go and live in Australia in February was taken. Stone pots with flowers were also missing.

Mrs Taylor left two stone angels, but when she went back four days later these had been taken as well as another stone ornament.

Then the third time Mrs Taylor went to the grave she found the dozen tulips she had put in a glass jar were also missing.

Mrs Taylor said: "I come up here to keep the grave tidy and this is desecration. I can't understand why anyone would do a thing like this, but with it happening twice it feels like we're being targeted.

"I'm frightened of putting anything else down now in case it gets stolen.

"There was a security guard up here 24 hours a day while the houses were being built, but there is no-one here now. Coming to your husband's grave is upsetting enough without having to worry about things like this."

Inspector Dale Sexton said: "Any theft from a graveyard is deplorable and we will be looking into these incidents."

The Rev Andrew Howell said: "I sympathise with Mrs Taylor, but there isn't a lot we can do. The graveyard is open ground and the cost of having a security guard would be prohibitive."

This mindless act of desecration gives no gain only juvenile satisfaction. My empathy is with the victim who understandable feels victimised. Security costs wouldnt be needed if we gave them somewhere to go and something to do.

It's incredible that someone could stoop so low as to do this. My sympathies are with the families, and I hope they catch the culprits.
