Father and son charged over killing

A FATHER and son have appeared in court in connection with the death of a man who was shot at Freehold flats.

Mohammed Aslam, 55, of Aysgarth, Hamer, is charged with murdering Zulfqar Hussein by shooting him in the back.

His son, Imran Ali Aslam, 28, of Mentmore Road, Firgrove, is accused of concealing evidence - namely the shotgun, a motor vehicle and clothes - and possessing a sawn-off shotgun.

Appearing before Rochdale magistrates on Monday, the pair spoke only to confirm their names and addresses.

Both were remanded in custody until Tuesday of next week when they will appear at Minshull Street Crown Court.

Another man, 30, who was arrested last Thursday has been released without charge.

On the night he died, 46-year-old Mr Hussein, from Halifax, had been visiting Rochdale for a meal to celebrate Eid.

He later went to the flat in Freehold, near the Olney block, between Tweedale Street and Drake Street.

There he received a fatal gunshot wound to his back.

He was rushed to Rochdale Infirmary, but died the same night.

A close friend, Aftab Ahmed, previously described Mr Hussein as an 'ordinary chap, a nice guy all round who had lots of time for his friends and family.'

The divorcee had a 20-year-old son and had arrived in the UK in 1973 after fleeing the dictatorship of Idi Amin in Uganda.
