Truck driver taken on a ride of terror

A TRUCK driver endured a 150-mile ride of terror before being left tied to a tree in just his boxer shorts in Milnrow.

The 42-year-old, who was bundled out of his lorry and into a car boot in Northampton, was dumped in Harbour Lane early on Tuesday morning.

His wagon, which had contained electrical goods, was found empty and on fire in a field in Stockport a few hours later.

Police say five men abducted the driver while he was asleep in the cab, wrapping tape around his head and blindfolding him.

They also tied his hands.

He was left in Milnrow, where he eventually managed to break free from his belt - used to tie him up - and call for help.

Northamptonshire Police said the driver, who is from Herefordshire, was left badly shaken but unhurt.

Detective Inspector Neil McMahon said: "The victim was very shocked after being held captive for a number of hours, especially as he had been threatened and intimidated.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have seen a large quantity of electrical goods which they think has been stolen or who saw the victim being dropped off to come forward."

He added: "In the past few months, we have had two other HGV drivers held captive.

"Other forces are dealing with incidents of this nature although, fortunately, they are rare.

"Since the victim is usually alone it is hours before they are able to call the police. This is why the drivers are often kept overnight and left miles away.

"I advise drivers to be vigilant and park in designated HGV areas or park with other lorries."
