Bury's only complaint is that it's too popular

METROLINK should have been an essential gift to Rochdale from the government.

That's the view of Councillor John Byrne, leader of Bury Council, who has seen his town's congestion cut and the borough become a location in its own right since trams returned to the streets.

As Rochdalians continue to bemoan the loss of a much-needed service, Councillor Byrne said the only negative thing his borough's citizens could complain about was that Metrolink was so popular, it was becoming overcrowded at rush hour.

Councillor Byrne claims the light rail network has also boosted the town's fortunes economically and made it a desirable place to put down roots.

He said: "Metrolink has had a massive impact on the town. I think it is carrying twice as many people as was first suggested it would. It has also helped reduce traffic on the A56, which is the busiest route in Greater Manchester. People are also encouraged to come and spend half a day in Bury without having to worry about the car.

"I wouldn't dream of driving into Manchester now when it only takes 20 minutes on the tram. Others have moved to Bury because of the short time it takes into the city centre for work. I see the Metro as an essential part of any town's transport system."
