A bombshell for Newbold

30/ 7/2004

HOPES of seeing a reliable public transport system have collapsed with the government's Metrolink bombshell.

That's the view from Kingsway councillors Lynne Brosnan and Thomas Stott, who say the proposed Newbold stop would have created speedier links with the town centre and Manchester.

At present, bus users are forced to wait for slow, unreliable buses, while drivers face heavy rush-hour tailbacks on the busy Kingsway, according to Councillor Brosnan.

She said: "Metrolink would also have taken cars off the road, which would alleviate congestion and help the environment."

Councillor Stott agreed, saying: "If the scheme went ahead, it would be easier to get about and provide a direct line with Manchester."
