Now it’s time for the buses

30/ 7/2004

A TRAM stop planned for the £300M Kingsway Business Park would have been just the ticket for the 7,000 plus workers expected to find jobs there.

The land between the M62 at junction 21 and Kingsway has been earmarked for employment development since 1989.

The site is recognised as the flagship for Rochdale's local economic regeneration strategy with the potential to become a major focus for investment and jobs.

As well as the Metrolink stop to service the Kingsway area, an access road is to be built across the site with provision for buses, pedestrians and cyclists.

When the shock news broke that Rochdale was not to get the Metrolink extension, Rochdale Council chief executive, Roger Ellis, said an enhanced bus service would be sought to improve transport to the proposed business park.

It is hoped that the main infrastructure work on the business park will start on site by next spring and that it will be ready for use by autumn 2006.
