Decision is a kick in teeth

23/ 7/2004

THE HEAD of the managers of the regeneration of Inner Rochdale has described the decision as a kick in the teeth.

Abdul Hamied, general manager of the Economic Partnership, said: "I am very disappointed and frustrated at the latest news from Westminster. It is a real kick in the teeth."

"For some time now, in anticipation of the Metrolink, the Economic Partnership has been prioritising its investment on Drake Street and planning for a major development around the town centre. There will be inevitably some impact on this due to the secretary of state's announcement."

"I must admit I am worried that its loss and that of associated investment could hinder potential economic development and regeneration activities planned in the borough, particularly in the town centre."

"However, we have no alternative now but to look at doing the best with what we have and possibly concentrate on improving our public transport services to compensate."

"As part of the regeneration strategy £1.7M has been allocated to Drake Street, of which much has already been spent. This has gone on shop front improvements, renovation of office space, environmental improvements, car parking, art works and there were other plans for improvements around Wet Rake Gardens."

"Metrolink was a key driver in the economic strategy launched this spring. It would have generated investment along the Metrolink route and would have also connected local people to jobs in surrounding areas and Manchester."
