Lizzy guilty of child cruelty

26/ 1/2007

'WIFE Swap' star Lizzy Bardsley has been found guilty of child cruelty.

The 33-year-old of Hursted Road, Milnrow, had denied three counts of wilful assault and one of wilful ill-treatment of a child under 16, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

But a unanimous jury at Bolton Crown Court thought otherwise and sentence was adjourned for four weeks while probation reports are prepared.

Bardsley was bailed to return to court on 22 February and Judge David Hernandez said all sentencing options would be kept open.

The prosecution had alleged that Bardsley had punched and hit the child, tried to knee him in the groin, bit him and subjected him to foul-mouthed insults.

Her mother and two sisters testified against her.

Defending, Wayne Jackson said there had been no evidence from official sources, such as a GP or a school, to back up the allegations other than the alleged bite mark, the cause of which could not be determined by a doctor.

Taking the stand, Bardsley suggested her sisters had fabricated the claims against her because they were 'jealous and malicious' over her media appearances.

She also said she thought it acceptable to slap a child lightly on the arm or swear, but claimed she would never raise her fist.

Refuting claims she had a short fuse, she stated: "I have only lost my temper twice in my life.

"What people saw on Wife Swap was an extreme situation."

Bardsley shot to fame in October 2003 with her husband Mark on Channel Four's 'Wife Swap.'

She went on to appear in programmes like 'Celebrity Fit Club' - where she was a member of the winning team - and 'Back to Reality'.

In addition she won a celebrity special of 'The Weakest Link' and her and Mark ran a Blackpool B and B for the series 'Bed and Bardsley.'
