ROCHDALE will say thank you to hundreds of soldiers for their overseas service during a parade through the town centre.

Following a challenging six months tour in Afghanistan the Second Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers is now safely home.

The homecoming parade on Monday 30 November will give people a chance to welcome the soldiers back to the UK and thank them for their service in Afghanistan.

Council leader Councillor Alan Taylor said: "I would encourage as many people as possible to come and watch the parade and show the soldiers and their families how much we appreciate the dedicated way in which they carry out their duties."

Leader of the Labour group, Councillor Colin Lambert said: "The soldiers don't really get a sense of just how valued their service is when they are overseas so these events are fantastic for morale.

"This parade means a great deal to everyone and we're hopeful of a large turnout."

Leader of the Conservative group, Councillor Ashley Dearnley said: "This poignant event will reinforce the historic links between Rochdale and The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and will give people the chance thank the 2nd Battalion for their courageous service overseas."

The parade will start from the top of Drake Street, near Matalan at 11 am.

The 2nd Battalion will then parade down Drake Street into the town centre, towards the Esplanade.

A reception will then be held at the Town Hall.

Everyone is welcome to show their support by lining the route. The Esplanade will be closed to vehicles from 9am until approximately 1.30 pm due to the parade, and the Town Hall car park will also be closed.

However other town centre car parks will be open however, including the nearby bus station car park.

Families and friends as well as well wishers can also park in the Asda car park in Dane Street.
Lieutenant Colonel Mike Glover, regimental secretary for the Fusiliers in Lancashire said the reaction from people at home really makes their time serving overseas worthwhile.

He said: "We are delighted that Rochdale is hosting a homecoming parade for the Fusiliers, on their return from Afghanistan.

"It will give people chance to see the soldiers and welcome them home, but also enable the soldiers to express their appreciation for the kind well-wishes and messages of support that have been sent to them while fighting in difficult conditions in Helmand Province.

"The parades promises to be a great occasion."
