SUPERMARKET staff allegedly refused to serve a woman after claiming her Help for Heroes charity wristband meant she supported the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Beth Hoyle, of Whitworth, claims she was turned away from the tills at Asda in Dane Street, because the checkout operator objected to 'what she was wearing'.
The 'stunned' mum-of-three said: "My hand instinctively went to the Celtic cross around my neck. But the young lad on the till said it wasn't that, pointed to my Help for Heroes wristband and accused me of supporting the war. I told him it was nothing to do with the war, but about supporting our injured troops."
Mrs Hoyle, whose brother is an ex-paratrooper, complained to a supervisor but was shocked to hear he backed his staff member's approach.
She added: "I immediately complained to a supervisor, but he said the cashier was entitled to his opinion and it was his right not to serve me. I was disgusted."
Help for Heroes was founded in 2007 to help the wounded servicemen and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
The charity's patrons include Johnson Beharry VC, General Sir Richard Dannatt and Andy McNab, as well as celebrities including Ross Kemp and James Blunt.
Mrs Hoyle said she didn't hesitate about supporting the charity.
She said: "I bought two of the £2 charity wristbands from the local post office for myself and my son. I've also bought Help for Heroes Christmas cards and intend sending Christmas boxes to some of the troops, and I'm encouraging other like-minded people to do the same. Asda is owned by Walmart, which supports the American troops. I think this reflects very badly on the store. When you're working in a customer-based industry you should keep your opinions to yourself."
Whitworth Town councillor and Help for Heroes supporter David Chorlton, knows the Hoyle family and also wears a wristband.
He said: "A lot of people may not support the war but they do want to help the lads who have been badly injured. There are a lot of lads from Rochdale out there."
An Asda spokeswoman said: "We are big supporters of the Help for Heroes campaign and we sell the pin badges and wrist band in hundreds of our stores. That's why we were shocked and surprised to hear of an incident involving one of our colleagues at the Rochdale store. We are not aware of any incident of this nature taking place. If it were to be found true we would take it very seriously indeed. That's why we'd like to take this opportunity to invite the customer back into the store if she'd like to discuss the details with the store manager. We can then look to investigate the matter."

We all know that things are misconstrued in the papers, but please get your head out of the clouds - these situations are happening. Probably because these people are not educated into why the wars are happening?
Instead of arguing between ourselves which is pointless we should be taking our grievances up with the government, because that is the bigger picture behind all this. This nation should stop sitting on its arse moaning and actually do something about it - don't boycott Asda boycott Number 10.
Our soldiers are having to deal with the shit the Government creates - WE have all given them the power so lets take it away.
If all these people that have commented on here and on all the social sites and forums put their efforts into pettitions and changing the party in power then maybe we'd be getting somewhere???

The fundamental question here is: If you cant support your countries troops whilst stood in your local supermarket without some upstart behind a till having a pop you, what does that tell you about the state of things?
Everybody who has taken some time out to investigate this story are also well aware that Asda do support this cause, and that has never been in doubt. I know the regional management are shocked and are investigating the case, but at the moment it appears the check out staff run the show in Rochdale. If you proceed to counter argue this case with "they can serve who they like..." which some have tried, then lets see how you get on the next time someone takes offence at you for your race, colour, dress or jewellery next time your out and about buying a pint of milk.

Our troops are in Afghanistan because it's their job, and their employer has sent them there. Asda sends it's employees to work in a store, the MOD sends their employees to wherever the government of the day decides they should be deployed. Sometimes that is to Bosnia to protect Bosnian Muslims from Fascist Serbs. Sometimes that is to Iraq to get rid of an evil dictator and his hench-clan-extended-family-why-do-they-have-so-many-kids-anyway. At the moment it is in Afghanistan were fundamentalists with no hope of building prosperity or happiness or anything good or decent, would love to roam free and plot blowing up the planet while they make money out of dumping heroin on our streets. When these soldiers go through hell, being shot at, mined, exploded etc. They don't do this for kicks.
I don;t like the sound of some self-righteous individual deciding they can choose who they serve based on personal prejudice with only a coloured wrist-band as the criteria for doing so. How narrow minded would such an individual have to be? That sort of prejudice takes years to nurture, to be hawk-eyed enough to spot a 1cm wide wrist band and make a decision on the spot "Don't approve of you". We don't need that sort of bigotry in our society.
I am glad that Asda have stepped into the spotlight and are making moves to manage the situation. All right minded people will want to know the outcome of this.
Bigotry is bad for people, bad for society, it is uninformed and blind to discussion. Bigotry is what needs to be stood up to. It is good that this story made it into the press, in spite of the Observer's half hearted attempt to do it justice.

its time we spoke out about incidents like this, this is a form of islamic hatred against us, if these people do not agree with helping injured war heroes there is something seriously wrong with there heads, wether they agree with the war or not, raising money for injured troops is a good cause and asda have insulted alot of people by doing what they did.

Britain should not be involved in foreign wars or threaten the world with nuclear weapons.
Trident Mark II should be scrapped.
Rochdale needs a real socialist alternative because the only local politician in power at the moment with the guts to condem British troops and Trident is Paul Rowen.
He should use his MP surgeries at ASDA's to support these brave staff members.
Red Flag 4/11/2009 at 11:23 What planet are you on.....paul rowen does use asda to serve his rochdale constituancy????what year are you in as for nuclear trident mark 2 what are you on about we have had rident for years its old hat now.....im ex forces and every vanguard sub has these 18 years ago,god know what your on about before spouting total rubbish, for gods sake help him.

Whilst at work you are being paid to do a job. Asda sells Help the Heroes merchandise and therefore the employees should have kept their own opinion and comments to themselves whilst they were working.
The employee along with the supervisor require training or refresher courses on customer care. Or perhaps Asda might need to incorporate in their training programm that whilst employees are at work that they promote Asda and any merchandise they may be selling. That they cannot bring into the workplace their own negative views and opinions that these have to be left at the front door so to speak. However, when you leave work and are no longer representing Asda your opinions are your own and you can do what you will.
