A FUND-RAISING evening in memory of a loving wife takes place on Friday 13 February at Newtown Club.

The event at the Castleton club is being organised by brothers Derek and Bob Hamill to remember Bob’s wife, Anne.

Last year the event collected around £1,900 and all money raised goes to Springhill Hospice.

Since Bob Hamill set up the charity 12 years ago, it has raised around £28,000 for the hospice.

Mr Hamill, of Red Lane, Hamer, started the fund-raising in memory of Anne, who was cared for at the hospice during her last days.

He said: "My wife was 42 when she got breast cancer and she died at 48. My biggest regret was that she never got to see our first grandchild."

Mr Hamill set the ball rolling with a charity darts competition that raised £97 and the idea grew from there.

He now holds an annual charity evening at the Newtown Club as well as other events throughout the year.

On the night, his eldest son, Shane, will perform a selection of swing tunes.

Soloist Duncan Harvey will also play – all artists are performing free of charge – and there will be bingo, spot prizes and other entertainment.

Mr Hamill is appealing for items to auction off on the night and to put in for raffles. He says he will collect whatever anyone wants to contribute.

"Items like bottles of whisky and bathroom smellies I will raffle off. Things like meals I will be able to auction them," he said.

He would also welcome any cash donations.

Tickets cost £3 or pay on the door. For more information, call Bob on 659563 or Derek on 6537923.
