Plans are on table to stop speed

30/ 9/2008

A SPEED table is on the wish list for residents of Moorgate Avenue.

An application to remove a planning condition for traffic calming measures there was recently rejected by members of the Rochdale Township planning sub-committee.

Councillor William Hobhouse – who held a text message poll to find out if residents want traffic calming – is now hoping to work with the council planning department in a bid to get a table – a flat topped speed hump – at the junction of Moorgate Avenue and Kenion Road.

He says it is clear from consultation with residents that’s what they want.

And he says it would go ‘hand in hand’ with an existing plan for a speed table at the top of the avenue.

Councillor Hobhouse said: "I am quite clear that the vast majority of conservation area residents want a speed table. As to how we achieve that needs further discussion."

Pennine and Rossendale Estates, the developer behind 14 new mews houses in the avenue, wanted to remove the planning condition which stated it should install traffic calming. It said it would not be in keeping with the avenue because it is a conservation area.

Chris Grieves, of Pennine and Rossendale Estates, said: "I am disappointed that the committee has decided to refuse this application. I understand that it carried the officers’ recommendation for approval. However, that’s democracy. We’ve not yet received the decision notice so it is difficult for me to comment on what the next move will be until the notice has been received. The points made in the council’s decision will be considered."
