Battle against superbug is being won

THE number of people infected with superbug MRSA has fallen.
Statistics released by the Health Protection Agency showed that there were eight cases of MRSA at the hospitals run by the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust between April and June.
Two of these cases were at Rochdale Infirmary, three at Fairfield General and three at North Manchester General.
Between January and March, the trust had 17 cases of MRSA and 26 incidents from April to June last year.
A spokeswoman said the 70 per cent reduction in cases between April and June and the same period last year was a ‘testament to the hard work of staff’.
She added: "However, we are never complacent. Infection prevention and control remains at the top of our agenda and good hand-washing practice is the single most important step we can take to beating the bugs."
Recent hygiene initiatives include an ongoing CleanYourHands campaign that has seen more than 4,500 staff given additional handwashing training and the introduction of a bare below the elbows policy, designed to make it easier for staff to clean their hands properly.
Mike Farrar, chief executive of NHS North West, added: "We are taking healthcare associated infections very seriously.These figures show great progress and that is a tribute to the hard work of NHS staff coupled with the introduction of new products and technologies. We have also successfully recruited new hospital matrons to ensure standards are met."
