Leading world in quest for peace

ROCHDALE set the standard for the rest of Britain for the third year running on the United Nations International Peace Day.

More than 1,000 people took to the streets of Rochdale on Sunday to show their support for peace, with Nancy Dell’Olio, the former partner of ex-England manager Sven Goran-Eriksson, playing a prominent role.

She was joined by Colin Parry OBE, whose son Tim was killed in the Warrington IRA bombings in 1993, to hand out medals and the Truce International Football Cup to the winning players in the ‘kick a ball for peace’ competition.

Mr Parry then read poems from the three finalists in the poetry for peace competition, watched by Gerry Sutcliffe, the minister for sport.

Supporters paraded through the streets carrying huge banners of peace alongside a vintage car rally.

Organisers are now hoping to roll the peace parade out across Manchester to support United Nations campaigns.

Parade organiser John Farrington said: "It was a fantastic success, better than we could have ever dreamed. We had a lot of people saying how beautiful it was to see people taking notice, but we also need to look forward. Next year we are hoping that the Peace Parade will be bigger and better. We will be working with Link4Life to encourage the other nine Manchester boroughs to hold their own peace parade and in five years’ time we would like every town in the UK holding a parade. But Rochdale will always be recognised as the place where it all started."

In a town heavy in its population of asians and muslims, I noted a distinct absence of their presence at this event. Yet there were many hundred of them buying and selling at the carboot sale, held at the same time across the road at the town hall. Does this not tell us something?
