Fund-raisers battle it out

6/ 9/2008

KIND-hearted pub regulars battled it out on the pitch to raise £250 for the Observer’s Springhill Hospice campaign.

A team from the High Sheriff Hotel, Halifax Road, Hamer, put on their football boots and tested their skills against players from Rochdale Boroughwide Housing.

They proved to be up to the challenge and ran out 8-5 winners, before returning to the pub for a few drinks during an evening fund-raiser.

Bev Castleton, one of the organisers, thanked everyone for their support, including staff from Heywood sports complex who let the footballers use their facilities following a last-minute change of plan when Wardle FC’s pitch was waterlogged.

She said: "It was a brilliant day and we were really pleased with the amount of money that we raised.

"Hopefully we will run a similar event again in the future because we think Springhill Hospice is very important for the people of Rochdale."
