Fake designer goods bring £1,500 bill

A BELFIELD man was spared jail after admitting selling fake designer socks and underwear on Rochdale Market.
Mohammed Zahid, of Croxton Avenue, was sentenced to 100 hours’ unpaid work to be completed within the next 12 months and also ordered to pay £1,500 costs for selling counterfeit goods.
The 47-year-old pleaded guilty to 13 counts of offering for sale goods bearing a false trademark when he appeared before Rochdale magistrates.
In total, 110 pairs of socks and 21 packs of underwear were discovered on his market stall last September. Prada, Versace and Hugo Boss socks were among the items seized by Rochdale Council’s trading standards officers. All of these were found to be counterfeit.
His conviction was hailed as a success by Rochdale’s chief trading standards officer.
Michaela Monk said: "This is another positive result in our drive to get counterfeit products taken off sale. Cases like this help to protect consumers from being ripped off and ensure legitimate traders aren’t done out of business.We work hard to ensure that those manufacturing or trying to sell fake goods are identified and would encourage people to let us know if they see counterfeit products on sale."
A council spokesman said any members of the public with concerns about goods should telephone the trading standards team on 0845 4040506.
