Fall woman's train to hospital

29/ 8/2008

FIRE CREWS saved a woman who had fallen from a railway bridge - by ferrying her to hospital on a train that could have killed her.

Two engines from Rochdale scrambled to Belfield Mill Lane following reports a woman had fallen onto the track at 3.25pm on Wednesday 27 August.

They contacted railway bosses to halt trains running nearby.

Crews then used a ladder to climb down from the bridge and managed to carry the woman, who was thought to be suffering a broken leg, to a waiting train.

It took her to Smithy Bridge station where an ambulance was on standby.

A spokesman for the fire service said that a bush had broken the woman’s fall and added: “It was quite a tricky job. The first priority was to stop the trains. We then had to get onto the track. As it turned out there was a train nearby and we managed to get her to hospital using that.”

A police spokesman said there was no suspicious circumstances.
